WhatsApp Introduces Offline File Sharing Feature

WhatsApp is gearing up to introduce a new feature that allows users to share files and documents without needing an internet connection. This upcoming addition, known as “People Nearby,” has surfaced in the latest Android beta version, allowing offline file transfers between two WhatsApp accounts.

To utilize this offline file transfer capability, users must grant specific permissions, including being discoverable by nearby users, accessing storage and media files, and connecting with other devices on the local network. Despite these permissions, users retain the option to revoke them as needed. Moreover, file transfers via “People Nearby” will be end-to-end encrypted, ensuring privacy and security throughout the process.

The functionality of the “People Nearby” feature is straightforward, akin to Quick Share, facilitating file transfers between nearby devices. Users will encounter a dedicated screen displaying all available nearby devices for sharing files, photos, and more. Although the feature is currently in the testing phase and accessible to a limited number of beta users, WhatsApp plans to expand its availability in the coming weeks.
