In July 2020, Apple announced its plan that Apple aims to become carbon neutral throughout its overall business, manufacturing supply chain and product life cycle by the year 2030. Though Apple aims to become carbon neutral but its also true that it is already carbon neutral today due to its global corporate operations. This announcement by Apple illustrates that by 2030 almost each and every Apple device sold would have nearly zero climate impact. This strategy could further increase the demand of Apple products in Pakistan and other parts of the world.

Apple has also provided comprehensive detail on its approach to carbon neutrality as Apple aims to become carbon neutral along with a roadmap for several other companies. This is because industries look towards the reduction of their impact on climate change.
In its 2020 Environmental Progress Report, Apple provided comprehensive details regarding its plans to reduce emissions by 75% by 2030 while simultaneously developing innovative solutions for carbon removal for the remaining 25% of its carbon footprint. This strategy may also have a positive influence on Apple phones price in Pakistan and other parts of the world as the devices may become cheaper.
For the purpose of supporting these efforts and beyond, Apple has been able to establish an impact accelerator that would focus on investing in minority-owned businesses that can result in driving positive outcomes within their supply chain and in certain communities that are directly influenced due to environmental hazards. This accelerator is also an essential component of Apple’s recently announced $100 million Racial Equity and Justice Initiative. It is directly focused on specific efforts that can address education, economic equality and criminal justice reform.

For the purpose of expanding energy efficiency, Apple would lower its electricity utilization at its corporate facilities. It will also help to improve Apple supply chain management. For the purpose of identifying new ways for this to occur, Apple’s management is collaborating with US-China Green Fund.
They are investing $100 million in accelerated energy efficiency projects for Apple supply chain management. Apple has already proven it is possible by investing in projects related to energy efficiency upgrades to more than 6.8 million square feet of buildings last year. This was a strategy that lowered the needs for electricity by nearly one-fifth and also saved nearly $32 million for energy expenditures.
For the improvement of the Apple supply chain, the company has focused on low carbon product designs as Apple aims to become carbon neutral. Some of the examples of low carbon product designs include Apple continually increasing its use of recycled as well as low carbon materials for its products, improving designs to be energy-efficient and investing in innovative product recycling technologies.
In 2018, Apple decreased its carbon footprint by nearly 4.8 million metric tons. This was primarily due to their recycled content innovations as well as recycled materials for their products. This has also reduced the average energy needed for product utilization by nearly 78% over the last 12 years.
For the purpose of removing CO2 from the earth’s atmosphere, Apple has been investing in different nature-based solutions. This includes projects that focus on the protection and restoration of natural and forest ecosystems. One of those important initiatives is the restoration of important mangrove ecosystems in Colombia. This is because they are able to store nearly ten times more carbon than forests on land.
Apple’s future plans also include material and process innovations. It focuses on developing the first-ever carbon-free aluminum smelting process. This is an important move by the company and this will further increase demand for Apple products in Pakistan and other parts of the world.
For its current operations, Apple is already using 100% renewable energy. The company is now focused on creating new projects. The company wants to transition the Apple supply chain to clean power as Apple aims to become carbon neutral. Apple has commitments from more than 70 suppliers for utilizing 100% renewable energy for Apple production. More than 14.3 million metric tons of CO2 emissions can be avoided. This is also equivalent of removing nearly three million cars off the road annually.
