World Press Freedom Day is dedicated to slain Journalists in Gaza

World Press Freedom Day, celebrated on the 3rd of May, is being celebrated at a time when the world needs to appreciate it the most. The world watches Gaza burning with almost 100 journalists and media persons killed while on duty. 

What is World Press Freedom Day?

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated by the United Nations (UN). It is celebrated to celebrate all those people who are involved in the Journalism and media industry throughout the globe and their efforts to uncover the truth.

Originally proposed in 1991 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and accepted in 1993 by the UN works for the well-being of journalists throughout the globe.

Data reports on the conditions facing freedom fighters; journalists and media persons are presented every year.

As of 2024, there has been a great spike in the death toll of journalists and media persons. A large chunk of these people has been killed while covering Israel’s genocide. As per the reports more than 100 journalists have been killed in the last 7 months in Gaza covering the genocide, reports also suggest deaths in Pakistan.
