Pakistanis Can’t Get Over The Urdu Mushaira That Actually Happened Outside Cafe Cannoli

The habit of social media users of not letting go of anything is known. From turning things into memes, to constantly talking about them, they never lose their hold. Well, the same happened with the whole Cannoli Café Soul incident. Pakistanis just can’t get over it!

Last week, a video of two female owners of a high-end café in the capital apparently mocking the English language skills of their manager emerged. Within no time, the video struck a nerve with Pakistanis on social media. The video was just too painful to watch. It vividly exhibited the colonial hangover of the restaurant owner. There is no denying, the owners had it coming.

The owners of the café tried to downplay their problematic viral video as gup shup among colleagues but the undertones of a crucial power dynamic were all too obvious for the cyber citizens to simply let go of.

More so, the brutal trolling continued as the netizens began mimicking the restaurant owners.

In order to protest against the Eurocentric ladies, an Urdu mushaira (a poetry recital) was also planned on Saturday outside the notorious restaurant. The event organizers invited the citizens to participate in the mushaira.

To our surprise, the mushaira did actually take place! Videos have been circulating on social media with a bunch of guys standing outside the café. They can be seen doing what can only be described as poetry, we suppose.

Here is a sneak peek into the Urdu mushaira event

Earlier, Shaniera Akram shared her two cents on the matter and slammed the owners for their insensitivity and inhumane behavior towards their restaurant’s manager. In addition to this, she later challenged them for an ‘English’ competition.

All in all, things have not cooled down yet. In fact, when the owners issued an apology, it only came off as tone-deaf and gaslighting which further enraged the public. It must also be noted that the cafe manager Awais Altaf also broke his silence on the ongoing media trial of his employers. Even his statement and take on the matter, which was quite surprising and unexpected, did not make the social media users cool off.

Cafe Cannoli closed after the public outrage?

It is pertinent to mention that according to unconfirmed reports, the café has allegedly been closed after the public outrage. However, there is no official news on the matter yet.

Meanwhile, people are trying to reach out to the manager in order to help him get out of his toxic workplace, and find a new job. Many job offers have been pouring in for the victim.
