SHC Orders Restore Social Media Apps including x

On Wednesday, the Sindh High Court issued an order mandating the restoration of multiple social media platforms, one of which was X (Twitter).

Amidst the course of the proceedings, Chief Justice Aqeel Ahmad Abbasi, who was presiding over a case that contested the nationwide suspension of internet services, expressed his dissatisfaction with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

The PTA’s legal representative informed the court, citing a letter from the Interior Ministry, that the Ministry of Information had given the authority the order to shut down internet services nationwide on election day.

Additionally, he elaborated that the PTA had adhered to the instructions that were received.

On election day, Chief Justice Abbasi inquired about the justification for the suspension of internet services and questioned the security implications of impeding the democratic process.

Chief Justice Abbasi lambasted the disruption resulting from the suspension of internet services, which hindered the ability of individuals to engage in electoral campaigns and participate in the electoral process.

About the PTA counsel’s submission, Chief Justice Abbasi emphasized that May 9 was referenced in the written response.

In response, the PTA counsel reported that by May 16th, internet services had been reinstated.

Following this, Chief Justice Abbasi issued an order to restore internet services and postponed the proceeding until March 5.
