Quran’s Beautiful Teachings About Tolerance That You Probably Don’t Remember

Our religion Islam today, looks a whole lot different than what I imagine it to have been in the past. It makes one wonder that how can a religion that once stood for the rights of women, tolerance, and peace now mean something else entirely? Now, you hardly ever hear people do good in the name of God.

All you hear are words like death, genocide, and intolerance.

Let Prophet Muhammed PBUH Be Our Guide

Doesn’t it make you wonder about what things were like when our prophets were still living? Do you think that when our beloved Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) became a messenger of Allah, that he was ordered by Him to bring forth his religion onto the people by force and by a sword? If that were the case, Islam would never hold the importance in our hearts that it does today.

This is what our Holy Quran tells us is Allah’s word on the matter.

(And as for My messenger,) there is no (obligation) on him except to deliver (the. message). God knows what yon expose and what conceal. (5:99).

We try our best to live our lives the way Prophet Muhammed (may peace be upon his soul) did and yet we fail to show tolerance to people of different faiths. If our prophets were such a perfect example of tolerance, then why do we fail to follow in their footsteps?

Tolerance On All Fronts

It is not just about religion, it is something much more than that. It is the fact that when we are at odd with someone that holds a different opinion than we do, instead of respecting them for it, we raise our voices to show how we are right and they are wrong.

According to Sahih Bukhari, Ibn Abbas reported that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said the following.

Teach others, make things easy, and do not make things difficult. When one of you is angry, he should remain silent. (Sahih, Musnad Ahmad 2137).

When has there ever been room for arguments in our religion, why now do we argue at almost everything today?

The Beauty Of Islam

Islam teaches us to be kind to each other, to make peace and to spread knowledge in the most humble of ways. That’s the beauty of our God. Tolerance is a stepping stone that leads us to be a good Muslim, which I am sure all of us want to be at one point in our lives, even if it isn’t now.

You must think that you are a tolerant person but the truth is that the word you are looking for is ignorant. When it comes to things that truly matter, like accepting a person that belongs to a different religion as a brother and treat them as an equal, I am afraid, we all fall behind.

It is something I think we should change about ourselves, you who is reading and me. Wouldn’t you agree?
