Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has launched a campaign related to Breast Cancer Awareness that will continue the entire month. A lot of prominent platforms are raising their voice about breast cancer and it is refreshing to witness that!

PTCL’s club for female employees, also called The Pink Club, is organizing a digital campaign that will help the staff of the company to understand more regarding the illness. It is also going to focus on the importance of detecting breast cancer before it turns deadly. This is impressive considering that breast cancer is the leading cause of death for a lot of women.

Moreover, women do not realize that they might have cancer because the awareness about the disease is so minimal. There have been more than 8 million cases of breast cancer in 2018 only. It is also the second leading cause of deaths among women; the first being lung cancer.

The illness is considered as a taboo because society pressurizes people to not mention ‘inappropriate’ body parts. However, the real question is how are people to going to be wary of a common, dangerous illness, if the topic is forbidden. It would be difficult to know what a lump within the breast or the sudden pain in the area could mean. Women can shrug the pain off and believe that it might be associated with something else.

The fact that we close the curtains on this illness can cost us a life. The risk of breast cancer is relatively lessened through earlier screening which helps in providing first-hand prevention. Even though, cancer is a dangerous, life-threatening illness, it can easily be rooted out if the symptoms are rightfully recognized and the disease is properly diagnosed.

A Great Initiative From The Company’s Part:

The Chief Human Resource Office of PTCL Syed Mazhar Hussain mentioned regarding the campaign:

“We are a socially responsible company and give due importance to the health and well-being of our employees. Although Breast Cancer has normally been associated with females, we are ensuring awareness also to men for enabling them to play their role in educating and taking care of their family members. Awareness is the key to early detection and I am sure these sessions will help our employees and their friends and families to live a healthy life”

Moreover, the campaign also included a talk by the company’s Senior Medical Officer, Dr. Asma Mahfooz. The purpose of the discussion was to answer some of the questions or concerns that the PTCL employees wanted to clear. The talk has been informative because it has given proper insights on the coping methods and details behind the disease. It is encouraging to see that this company is making sure that its employees get to benefit from such information. Often, people don’t receive the opportunity to hear such comprehensive talks over an illness that is stigmatized because of conservative ideas.
