The grand opening ceremony of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020 was held Thursday in National Stadium, Karachi. Fans’ excitement and enthusiasm are on its peak as PSL comes to Pakistan. But, all the fans left disappointed after a below-average ceremony.
More than 300 artists performed before Islamabad United locked horns with the Quetta Gladiators. The show was hosted by a new face of Pakistan entertainment industry VJ Ahmed Godil. His over-enthusiastic hosting, as well as mimicry of Prime Minister Imran Khan, became the butt of the joke on Twitter.

Godil had attempted to warm up the crowd ahead of the performances scheduled for the ceremony. However, it didn’t go down well with the audience. Even the performances that were supposed to be ‘live’ seemed badly rigged. The fireworks and the light show at the end of the ceremony was the only impressive moment of the night ahead of the opening match.
Other major setbacks during PSL 5 opening ceremony
According to media reports, PSL 5 management also faced some other major setbacks during the ceremony. The PCB installed two giant screens at Karachi’s National Stadium for the opening ceremony that have reportedly blocked the view of at least two big enclosures in the stadium. As a result, spectators were left disappointed with the poor management.
In order to compensate for the setback, the PCB installed a new screen on top of the old scoreboard. However, the new screen was one that is usually used to screen content at weddings and is not of sports quality. The ticket of those two enclosures was of Rs 2500 but then was reduced to Rs 1500.
Moreover, over Rs 200 million was spent on the grand ceremony which didn’t even entertain the audience. It was an utter waste of money and time. Even the celebrities who performed during the ceremony weren’t entertaining enough except for Abrar-ul-Haq. He was still far more entertaining than any other artistes who performed last night. Pakistani fans missed some power-packed performances by celebrities like Ali Zafar and Fahad Mustafa.
Here’s how Twitter is reacting towards PSL’s subpar opening ceremony
Social media is heavily trolling the management and especially the host for successfully ruining the opening of one of the biggest events of Pakistan.
PKR 210 million spent on the pathetic excuse of an opening ceremony of PSL for which an Indian Director was flown in.
