The film got high appreciation from the critics, but the Oscar jury felt different and explained the reason behind not shortlisting the film.

Sardar Udham didn’t make it to the Oscar

One of the Oscar Jury members, Indraadip Dasgupta said “Sardar Udham is a little lengthy and harps on the Jallianwala Bagh incident. It is an honest effort to make a lavish film on an unsung hero of the Indian freedom struggle.

But in the process, it again projects our hatred towards the British. In this era of globalization, it is not fair to hold on to this hatred.”

Another reason behind the rejection was the delayed climax and lengthy movie. But on the other hand, also praised the cinematography too. “I thought the length of the film was an issue.

It has a delayed climax. It takes a lot of time for a viewer to feel the real pain for the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.”

Actor & Director’s reaction

When the reasons were revealed, the actor Vicky Kaushal and Shoojit Sircar released their statements.

Vicky said, “the jury members made the selection and we have to respect that selection.” The director Shoojit Sircar said, “It is a personal opinion, it is very subjective,

I have no comment on that. I respect the jury and their decision. The film that was finally selected, I know about it, and I am glad that it was chosen. I go by the jury’s decision.”

Fan’s angry reaction

The way the Oscar jury expressed their reasons surely indicated the double standards. Fan of the film didn’t like the reasons at all.

One of the fans tweeted, “So Indian kids lathered in poop, begging and fending for themselves in Slumdog Millionaire is more palatable as a representation of Indians. But a realistic depiction of the horrifying acts of British imperialism in our country is problematic? #SardarUdham.”

Another user responded on Dasgupta’s reasons, “Showing Indian poverty can win Oscars. But showing British treatment towards Indians cannot be even considered for Oscars. Hats off to your logic Mr. Dasgupta #SardarUdham.”

Indian fans are furious at the Oscars and their tweets say everything. Another furious user tweeted, “The Jury had rejected the movie #SardarUdham as an official entry to Oscar 2020.

As “It projects hatred towards the British”! Unbelievable… A film on (freedom fighters) Udham Singh and Bhagat Singh and they expect a display of bhaichara (brotherhood) of the British Rule?”

Sardar Udham critics wise portrayed the story brilliantly and Vicky Kaushal’s performance was considered as one of the best ones. Vicky is already in the limelight because of his and Katrina Kaif’s wedding rumors.

Apart from Sardar Udham, Tamil film Koozhangal, by debutant director PS Vinothraj, has been sent as India’s official entry to Oscars 2022. It’s a huge thing for Tamil cinema.
