What Kind Of New Years Resolutions Do Pakistanis Usually Make?

New Year, New Me! Just a day left until you start hearing this phrase from everyone around you.

It is a basic human habit how we scramble towards the decision of making everything in our lives better just as the year changes. It is in our nature that we like to fix things up when we have a compelling chance. The new year is that one chance.

2017 will be another attempt of ours at turning bygones of the past about making things right in our life. By December, we tend to push every mistake, every bad habit and almost everything that we look forward to making a resolution out of.

It’ll be the 1st of January and we are buzzing with motivation to get our New Year’s resolutions underway. We try to get everything together. We sign up for multiple programs for our well-being and are always on the look out of making everything better.

It is only by the first week of January that everything starts crumbling. We tend to fall flat and are resolutions nose-dive. By the time we recover from depression, it’s February and we realize that we should just let it all go.

As the world keeps getting small, the trend of New Year’s resolutions has succumbed to Pakistan. Pakistanis are now forming their resolutions and seem pretty motivated about it.

We may not be so persistent in practicing our resolutions but we are well determined in making the year ahead count.

We ask what kind of resolutions we Pakistanis have; so let’s just find out!

1. “I’ll start studying harder”

The one thing we keep telling ourselves. Semester started a couple of months before and we stretch the plan to study until it’s a whole new year because we want that push in our lives.

Just getting done with all the crazy things and the procrastination you could do till 31st of December because the next day, you are going to be a whole new person and will start it all over with your textbooks.

2. Shadi

Yes, there exists people who do not get married in December in Pakistan. Yes, those rare Pakistanis. They delay their weddings until it’s a fresh year.

Some people already have had enough during the ongoing year that they want a break and leave something for the time ahead to make memories. Or they are just not prepared and like to think that they’ll be ready and have everything in operation by the time it’s the new year.

3. “I’ll join the gym to get rid of this flab”

Okay, you have had enough. You cannot carry that emblem of utter embarrassment any longer which is synonymous with your stomach. You have seen enough inspiringly fit people and you just wanna get going. You cannot take all the taunts and embarrassment when people just scramble their attention towards your bulging tummy.

You wanna get your game underway and come out a whole new person. But by the time it is 2nd week of January, you realize what you really got yourself into. You either let it go and get back to square one or you toil by every day that passes. Keep the latter; keep up the good work!

4. Binge on that series

That friend with whom you always catch up after a long day at work always brings up the question, “Yaar tumnay woh dekhlia?” And you just make quite an expression for them to understand what you’re trying to say but can’t say.

You keep delaying, keep giving your friend a lead each time until its the last week of December when you think about having a resolution. You just can’t decide on anything other than binging on that series and getting done with it already.

5. “Yeh movie dekhunga; woh movie dekhunga”

By the last week of December, you tend to ask many people of some movie suggestions. They fill you up with good options and you have to scrutinize what you’re gonna watch this new year. You so avidly shortlist, contemplate about how you’ll make time for every movie you intend to watch and be excited. Good plan, but it really matters if you can get it rolling.

6. Time to start offering regular prayers

Remember when every night you are trying to sleep and your brain keeps on bombarding ideas, thoughts, and realizations after realizations? That’s when you probably make a New Year’s resolution because you are so vulnerable and you want to be better. You’ve been neglecting spiritual steadfastness and this is the best time to make a plan. Best of luck, guys.

7. “I’ll ask them out so that I am not alone on the next New Year’s Eve scrolling down my newsfeed in tears, regretting my existence”

You think everyone is going to be with their significant other when the clock ticks 12 am. They’ll party, enjoy each other’s presence and be locked in such a passionate embrace that you drool them over as a single person.

You are alone out there in a cold room, sobbing and scrolling down your newsfeed learning about your friends’ activities that you seem to overly glorify when you have no idea that reality is nothing what pictures tend to show.

You think about that person and you start fantasizing how much better it could be if you were with them. Then your motivated instinct ignites and you decide to give it a shot of asking them out.

8. “I’ll heed my self-esteem and get over them and the twisted relationship”

Hah! There you are recalling your past, frustrated and lamenting at yourself. What have I become, seriously?
You wasted the whole year picking up and reflecting upon the fragments of your shattered relationship and beat yourself up trying to get over them. Just when the new year is close, you think about letting it all go and move on.

You try not to think and stop yourself of every move that leads to their memories until you just open your Instagram and visit their profile to check out what are they up to on New Year’s Eve. Game over.

9. “I’ll sleep on time so that I can function the next day”

Every morning you have the worst feeling. You don’t wanna bid farewell to your bed. You don’t wanna put food in your mouth. You just don’t wanna do anything. You show up at your workplace or where ever you go first thing in the morning and when people ask you, “why are you so dead?”, you just like to say, “I couldn’t sleep last night.”

Couldn’t sleep? Yeah, right. Check your browser history. You’ll find search pages of something like, “how dinosaurs used to have sex?” or, “did people kill themselves when they had to answer nature’s call during 1000000 BC?” or, “dank memes – page 67 of 200”.

10. “I’ll stop spending half my salary on food”

This time you are researching on The Wallstreet Journal or the TIME magazine to find effective ways of saving money and becoming a millionaire.

You recall all those times you let go of cash after cash on all those calories that wreak a havoc still today. This also becomes a sub-division of your New Year’s resolution of joining the gym because you want to eat healthier and stop spending loads of cash on cheat meals.

So, that is probably what most Pakistanis have as their New Year’s resolutions. I think I managed to predict yours. Good luck with all your plans and please try to be persistent.
