One of Pakistan’s most prestigious and seasoned university, the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), is trending once again. Never shying out of attention, LUMS has become the talk of the town once again.
On Monday morning, students and other staff of LUMS woke up to an email from the university. The email stated that LUMS was officially changing its name to LUMSU. Moreover, this meant that the old name Lahore University of Management Sciences was dropped. LUMS is no more an acronym, but the name of the university. From now on, LUMS will be called LUMS University (LUMSU).

Additionally, this is what the email said: “Dear All, over the past three decades, LUMS has evolved from a management school to a comprehensive university offering over 30 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its school of Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, Law and Education.
The disciplinary growth and its comprehensive status are better captured by the phrase LUMS University which will replace “Lahore University of Management Sciences” in our formal and informal communications – both, print and digital. Please make changes where appropriate.”
Furthermore, once this email reached students, it caused mayhem on social media. Students, alumni, and staff all took to Twitter to showcase their response to the university’s unneeded name change.

In addition, there are hundreds of tweets lamenting the name change of LUMS to LUMSU. People have been talking about how it has only been a week into 2020 and LUMS has done something that has sparked controversy or debate.
However, it is pertinent to add here that the university reserves all the rights for subjections such as changing its name. LUMS University has always been a topic of debate as it is considered Pakistan’s most elite school. From the ‘sexist’ group that existed in the university to derogatory acts by students — LUMS never shies away from attention.
