The shocking incident of PIC Lahore trembled the country. The vicious attitude of lawyers was more than horrific. On one hand, many condemned the incident and rebuked the lawyers. Whereas, on the other hand, many in the lawyers’ committee protested against the detention of lawyers.
However, on Friday, a senior judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC) censured the attack on the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) orchestrated by lawyers. Moreover, the judge maintained that the episode induced an evil name to the judiciary as well.

The judge, Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, while listening to the various petitions challenging the arrest of lawyers in PIC case reprimanded the lawyers. He said, “How did the lawyers even think of attacking a hospital? You left us with no respect. It does not happen even during wars.”
“We are hearing these petitions with great pain. We can transfer it forthwith if you say so,” Justice Najafi further told the lawyers’ leaders present in the hall.
The judge remarked that some “black sheep” had been smearing the image of the entire legal fraternity and the bar is warranted to take stern action against them. The judge further said that it showed the law of jungle was controlling in Pakistan when lawyers attacked the PIC.
“No society can sustain under the law of jungle,” Justice Ali Baqar Najafi added.
The arguments
Azam Nazir Tarar, member of Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) said the whole legal fraternity was in intense grief and pain over the PIC episode.
Justice Najafi asked Mr. Tarar if he could give a single reason for the assault on the hospital and appended that the lawyers should tender a public apology.
Tarar answered the lawyers’ management condemned the episode in the greatest manner. Besides, Justice Pannun asked Tarar did any bar council had showcased eagerness to take action against the guilty lawyers.
Mr. Tarar stated the bar would take action against the lawyers concerned in the assault. The bar will suspend the license of responsible lawyers.
He stated the police tormented the lawyers as if they had gone to battle with India. Even if there was anarchy in society, police could not hurt any citizen, he said. He also claimed that the arrested lawyers were delivered to the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) for persecution.
Notwithstanding, Justice Ali Baqar Najafi remarked that apparently the lawyers were the offenders.

The judge also observed that captured lawyers would have to ask bail from the trial court. He postponed hearing till Dec 16 and asked a response from the capital city police officer about the cases and detained lawyers.
In the meantime, a committee of lawyers’ leaders, led by PBC member Ahsan Bhoon, hit the PIC with bouquets and met agents of the Young Doctors Association (YDA). Reciprocally, Dr. Muhammad Zeeshan and Dr. Atif Chaudhry greeted the committee.
Speaking to the doctors, Mr. Bhoon apologized on account of the entire lawyers’ circle and termed the episode a tragedy.
The PIC incident was one of the most horrific incidents of Pakistan. It exhibited the sinister mentality of some educated lawyers, who can go to any extent in the name of so-called ‘revenge’.
