Pakistan-Thereek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) MNA Iqbal Afridi has been in the spotlight for the last couple of days, and all for the wrong reason. In a recent National Assembly Standing Committee meeting PTI’s Muhammad Iqbal pointed to the cloth worn by a female representative of K-electric.

Meanwhile, it is pertinent to note that Pakistan is currently going through an economic meltdown. Furthermore, the last thing the people of the land want from their opposition is to ensure accountability of the government by the opposition on matters that affect them directly. However, the people’s representative, Muhammad Iqbal Afridi thinks otherwise.

Iqbal made the derogatory remark after the meeting. In addition, many members of his party have disowned his statement. Iqbal cited the morality in question with such a dress code and emphasized certain dress codes/SOPs for meetings. On the contrary, he did not find a suitable answer for the high rise in electricity bills in Karachi.

Overbilling has added to the dissolution of the middle class, and the degradation of sanity. Thus, leading to the rise of suicide cases in Pakistan. People are not able to pay for the necessities. All the addition to the patriarchal, misogynistic, rhetoric of the electable MNA.

Iqbal did find a sense of loss of identity. However, with no brains to think properly, identity seems a thing of the elite.

One should not hold Iqbal accountable for his views as he is the representative of a conservative society. Moreover, it is an irrefutable reality. However, one should also not deny the materialistic necessities of the time.

Furthermore, Iqbal’s failure to acquire an answer from the K-Electric official over the overbilling is in itself a moral disappointment. For, Iqbal’s foremost duty is to hold government and private organizations accountable for the well-being of the people of Pakistan.

In addition, no room should be given to the female representative, and also, her failure to answer over-billing still stands in question. Her moral stand should be for the overall well-being of society. Regardless, of her status in the hierarchy of K-Electric, her continuous silence over the matter adds to her distance from her moral norms. Parts of rationalistic production, i.e. understanding the needs of the consumer.
