Tension arose in India’s Haryana since Sunday after a 27-year-old gym instructor’s body was found hours after his kidnapping by people mostly from his own village. The police had to baton charge angry mobs and fire in the air to disperse them at a few places. Many of those who attended the victim’s funeral, too, pelted stones at the police.
Asif Khan, a resident of Haryana’s Nuh district, was kidnapped on Sunday while he was out with two cousins getting some medicines. They were first waylaid by a dozen people and beaten up. Khan was then taken away, leaving his battered cousins behind at the scene of the abduction.
The complainants alleged that their attackers shot Khan and also used other weapons on him. His body was found only later. Police claimed there was no “Hindu-Muslim angle” to the incident. The two groups allegedly had a tiff going which was often resolved by senior members of the village till then, he said.
The key accused belong to Khan’s village, Kheda Khalilpur. Some of them have been arrested while the rest are on the run, the police said. “Both the groups face cases under sections of the Arms Act and for assault. Six accused have been arrested. An SIT has been constituted which is probing the case.”
A post-mortem was conducted on Khan’s body on Monday. The police later arrested 10 persons who allegedly pelted stones at the police during the funeral.
Police baton charge angry protesters
In the meantime, mobs blocked the road late last night over the killing. The police baton-charged angry protesters and even fire in the air disperse them at another spot. Moreover, a vehicle’s windshield shattered in the stone-pelting. SP Singh appealed to the protesters to be patient, saying the police were with the victim’s family.
According to AIMIM Maharashtra Unit President and former Mumbai MLA Waris Pathan’s report, Khan was forced to chant ‘Jai Shree Raam’ by Hindu vigilante groups that led to his death.
As of now, police have lodged a case and have also nabbed six people for questioning while the family has said more than 12 people were involved in the killing of Khan.

Soon after news of Khan’s brutal killing came out, hashtag #JusticeForAsif started trending on Twitter.
Torturing Muslims to death is nothing new in India. In March 2020, the Indian mob also burnt an 85-year-old Muslim woman to death.
Two months back, a Muslim man was forced to chant anti-Pakistan slogans and thrashed while being filmed.
