Thousands of students graduate every year in Pakistan in all the different fields with aspirations and dreams. We think about being millionaires, studying abroad, getting a good job or just getting married. Despite all these varying aims, most of us don’t have any idea about what we really “want” to do. Most of us haven’t even figured out what we’re good at which can be very challenging. There are insecurities and family pressures and in all this, we never actually sit down and give proper thought to what “we” would rather be doing. Even if you know that there are hardly ever any opportunities to actually work towards your goals.

All we want is to settle down, get a job, and start a family. Easy, right? Well . . .

Finding a job can be a daunting task and it can take a toll on you. Many graduates wait for years to get a job and I believe that the most difficult thing to do after graduation is to wait. That’s when the societal pressures are at their peak. Every relative asks you whether you’ve started a job or not and what you’re doing with your life and unfortunately, all you can do is smile while your heart boils inside.

I believe this is the entire problem. We look for a job, any job that pays well, regardless of how we would do there. Nonetheless, it then becomes the reason for many working people to be unhappy with their jobs and wish to be doing something else. But, at the end of the day, it all comes down to “money” and we put a heavy lid on our happiness and goals in order to earn money.

Now let’s get real. We’re lazy people, right?

Most of us have been borrowing money from our parents and are solely dependent upon them at least till graduation but unfortunately, habits don’t change easily. Our parents do everything to fulfil our needs and once we graduate, we continue to expect that. In many countries, students work along with their studies to earn their pocket money and be independent. Unfortunately, that is, something missing in our society. If you wish to change your situation, you have to be strong enough to get up and do something productive. Make a plan on what you want to do and what you’re good at.

Ask yourself this: What am I good at? What can I do that’ll make me happy? How can I earn with that?

Our insecurities and lack of entrepreneurship

In the 21st century, there are more opportunities than ever to start something you’re good at and earn a lot of money with it. We see YouTubers, vloggers, bloggers who earn a lot of money doing what they like sitting in their comfortable kambals. As a result of societal pressures, most of us have insecurities and we are afraid of failure. We need to realize that failing once is fine and it is very important to try. You don’t want to have any regrets when you’re 60 years old, thinking about what you could’ve done differently. So, start before it’s too late.

The time after you graduate is a very difficult one. You’ll be faced with many difficulties and decisions and there will be times when you may even start losing hope. But remember, it is never too late. You can do what you want. We see many people achieving their goals late in their lives as well. Start giving yourself time, start thinking about where you want to be in 10 years and what you’re doing to achieve that.

It is better to fail at what you want as life is short and you have to live it to the fullest.
