Fawad Chaudhry on Friday asked the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) to explain the reported marriage of 64-year-old Maulana Salahuddin Ayubi with a minor girl.
Earlier this month, news of the marriage of a 14-year-old girl with a man four times her age went viral on social media. The bridegroom was JUI-F’s Maulana Salahuddin Ayubi to everyone’s surprise.
According to details, the marriage took place in Chitral. Meanwhile, police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) said they were investigating the matter.
Indian media reported the ‘Very disturbing’ news of the marriage
Chaudhry told the National Assembly that the “very disturbing” news of the marriage was reported in Indian media today.
He said the reported marriage of Maulana Ayubi was a violation of the Child Marriage Restraint Act.
He said the government wasn’t investigating the matter. But the JUI-F leadership should only come and deny the incident. “We are being ridiculed over this across the world.”
“My heart is saddened that how we can allow such an act and expose our children like this,” he added.
In a tweet later, Chaudhry said he had “raised the issue of underage marriage by a JUI-F MNA”.
“I hope all sane voices in NA will take notice of this absurd act by a member of National Assembly and will join voice to seek explanation,” he wrote.
In an application, Anjuman Dawat-o-Azeemat had requested the police to determine whether the girl had attained the marriageable age. More so, if not, then requested to take action against all those responsible under the Prevention of Child Marriage Act.
Maulana Ayubi had won the NA-263 Qilla Abdullah seat in the 2018 elections on a ticket of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA).
Just earlier this month, Pakistan’s Former Federal Minister Syed Iftikhar Hussain Gillani tied the knot at the age of 80. He married a girl 59 years younger than him. Soon enough, pictures of 80-year-old Gilani marrying a 21-year-old girl went viral on social media.
