As we know, CSR aims to ensure that companies conduct their business in a way that is ethical. This means taking account of their social, economic and environmental impact, and consideration of human rights.

By engaging in corporate social responsibility, the companies are not only generating a favorable amount of profit but CSR is also increasing their goodwill and spreading a good image in the market place.

Corporate social responsibility is the activity or program that highly influences consumer buying behavior.

Consumers are attracted more towards brands who are engaging in corporate social responsibility. But the question is, are companies doing CSR for the right people or at the right place? We see many companies are doing CSR but their only purpose for doing so is to generate more profit and build strong goodwill in the society or in the marketplace.

Furthermore, they aren’t exactly interested in the betterment of the society rather they are actually taking advantage of CSR while maintaining a good brand image. Since the companies are run by society; it is their responsibility to maintain corporate social responsibility not only for goodwill; but also for the society, for the right people and at the right place.

If society won’t be healthy, who will buy their products? How will their companies run? Doing just plantation, cleaning the roads and donating huge amounts in welfare trusts is not the real CSR.

Yes! Companies should do these things as well but firstly; they should be concerned about those people in society who attempt suicide due to poverty, unemployment, being unable to fulfill the basic needs of their families and unable to educate their children.

There are a number of people who attempt suicide due to these issues.

Nonetheless, there are so many people who have died while in severe diseases just because they can’t afford the heavy expenses of their treatments. There are a lot of areas who are suffering from the unavailability of water in their homes; their lives are so tough that they are even deprived of the basic necessities of life.

Welfare trusts are already getting donations from various sources. Plantation and other things are no doubt very important but not more than the life of these people.

According to a survey done in 2017, the unemployment rate in Pakistan is 5.9%. Companies should, therefore, analyze who deserves their CSR and donations more. Despite this, these companies also use the ocean for waste disposal; including the disposal of chemical, industrial and radioactive wastes, trash munitions, sewage sludge, and contaminated dredged material; giving a negative impact on the marine environment.

Moreover, the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum and other factory combustibles is one of the main reasons for air pollution.

Nonetheless, companies should do their CSR to improve these damages that are highly damaging the natural and/or marine environment. The real meaning of corporate social responsibility is to do something for the betterment of society and to do it in the right place.
