Barzakh Writer and Director Defends LGBTQ Themes

Barzak is a Zee Zindagi series directed and written by Asim Abbasi, known for his film Cake and the web series Churails. The series stars Fawad Khan, Sanam Saeed, Muhammad Fawad Khan, Khushhal Khan, Uzma Beg, and Salman Shahid, and was filmed in northern Pakistan.

So far, three episodes of Barzakh have been released on YouTube. The first episode has 2.6 million views, while the second and third episodes have 998,000 and 586,000 views respectively. Despite featuring popular actors like Fawad Khan, the viewership is lower compared to other hit Pakistani dramas.

Recently, a fan criticized Asim Abbasi for promoting LGBTQ themes in Barzakh. The fan accused him of glorifying the LGBTQ agenda and urged others to boycott the show. In response, Abbasi defended his work, stating, “With all due respect, if you find queer/non-heteronormative storylines ‘distasteful,’ please do not watch my content. Thank you.” He emphasized that the team behind Barzakh believes in telling these stories.

Many fans have already boycotted Barzakh, stating that it goes against their religious values and criticizing the promotion of LGBTQ themes, which they find unacceptable.
