200 Companies in the UK Now Offer 4-Day Workweeks

In the United Kingdom, 200 companies have permanently adopted a four-day workweek without reducing employee pay, affecting over 5,000 workers across industries like technology, charities, and marketing.

Driving this shift, the 4 Day Week Foundation argues that the traditional five-day work schedule is outdated. Joe Ryle, the foundation’s Campaign Director, urges companies to modernize. He emphasizes that a shorter workweek boosts happiness and productivity by giving people more free time.

Companies in London and sectors such as marketing and social care, are increasingly embracing the four-day schedule. Supporters highlight its perks, including improved employee well-being, smarter work habits, and stronger talent retention.

While this approach gains momentum in the UK, major US corporations like Amazon and JPMorgan Chase are moving in the opposite direction, requiring employees to spend more time in the office.

Young UK workers are actively advocating for this change, particularly those aged 18 to 34. A Spark Market Research survey found that 78% of respondents believe the four-day workweek will become standard within five years.

Political leaders are also weighing in. Labour’s Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner supports the shift, though some Conservatives oppose it.

As discussions intensify, the UK continues exploring ways to enhance work-life balance and modernize the workplace.
