Ramadan is one of the most auspicious months of the whole year for Muslims. They get a chance to enhance their spirituality and rejuvenate their faith all over again. Through fasting all day, Muslims make sure to restrict themselves from doing such chores that would affect their fast. However, their main concern is to ensure that their Roza (fast) remains intact and they don’t break it unintentionally.

What Breaks A Fast Ramadan?

So, here is a list of such 12 things that usually arise a question in our minds whether it would break our fast or not, along with their verdicts given by Islamic scholars;

1. Applying Liquid Perfume Or Incense:

Smelling or applying perfume does not break the fast, according to the Mufti Shaykh Ibn Al-Uthaymin and Shaykh Ibn Baz.
Condition: It is permissible to apply such perfumes as long as one does not inhale or ingest it.

2. Nose Bleed Or Bleeding From The Mouth:

Any such bleeding does not break the fast, in accordance with the verdict given by Mufti Shaykh Ibn Al-Uthmayin.
Condition: After you bled, swallowing blood should be avoided.

3. Using An Inhaler:

Using an inhaler when you need it does not break the fast, as per Mufti Shaykh Ibn Al-Uthamyin and Shaykh Muqbil.

4. Masturbation:

Masturbation while fasting does break your fast according to Mufti Shaykh Ibn Al-Uthmayin.
Condition: If a person does not ejaculate while fasting the fast is still valid. However, he/she must repent for their sin immediately.

5. Lying To Someone Or Swearing/Using Bad Language:

Lying or swearing does not break your fast, in accordance with Mufti Shaykh Ibn Al-Uthmayin’s verdict.
Condition: Although swearing and lying do not break the fast, it does reduce the reward of fasting.

6. Having Sexual Relations While Fasting:

Maintaining sexual relations while you’re fasting breaks your fast as per the verdict of Mufti Shaykh Ibn Al-Uthmayin.

7. Using Toothpaste Or Mouthwash:

During the fast, applying toothpaste or mouthwash does not break your fast according to Shaykh Ibn Al-Uthmayin and Shaykh Ibn Baz.
Condition: It is recommended though to avoid using a strong-flavored toothpaste or mouthwash as it may reach the throat.

8. Intentionally Eating Or Drinking During Your Fast:

Condition: Eating or drinking would not break your fast only if you did this unintentionally.

9. Taking Anesthetic Injection:

Taking anesthetic injection for any medical procedure does not break your fast according to Shaykh Ibn Al-Uthmayin.

10. Taking Nutritional Injections:

Taking nutritional injections does break your fast as per Shaykh Ibn Al-Uthmayin.
Condition: Nutritional injections are considered similar to food that is why it’s intake is prohibited.

11. Smoking During Fast:

Smoking while you’re fasting does break your fast according to Shaykh Ibn Al-Uthmayin’s verdict.

12. Kissing Or Hugging:

Kissing or hugging while fasting does not break it, in accordance with the verdict given by Shaykh Ibn Al-Uthmayin.
Condition: It is only permissible if these activities do not lead to sexual arousal. Although the emission of prostatic fluid does not break your fast, ejaculation does.
